Consisting of letters, 11 Jan. 1861 and 6 Dec. 1874, Fort Moultrie, S.C. and St. Louis Mo., to Capt. Walter Gwynn, [Chief of the South Carolina Engineer Bureau], and P.G.T. Beauregard, re his appoiontment as assitant engineer by Gov. F.W. Pickens and stating the impossibility of his continuing in office without "holding some rank commensurate with those responsibilities," discussing the purchase of eight monitors at New Orleans from the United States government by Messrs. Shickle, Harrison & Co., and mentioning possible resale of the vessels to a foreign government on a commission to be shared by Beauregard and himself.
